What are the benefits of non-opening rooflights?

At first glance, it may seem that the only advantage of non-opening roof windows is that they’re cheaper. After all, if you had a little more money to spend, wouldn’t you automatically opt for a rooflight you can open? While there are clearly cost advantages depending on the specification you choose, there are a certain number of other benefits associated with non-opening flat roof skylights too. The first centres on the essential purpose of a rooflight or skylight, and that’s to illuminate a previously dark space.

If you opt for non-opening skylights, you actually get more natural daylight for your money – and a better view of the night sky too! That’s because the construction of non-openers offers more glass than those that do open. Panes of glass can also be larger. This is simply because there is no need for extra metalwork to support the casement – in other words, the hinge mechanism and other associated framework. Additionally, the installation of non-opening windows generally causes less disruption and mess (as well as expense) because the unit or units can be sized to the overall dimensions of the rafters.

This is as opposed to an opening flat skylight, which usually requires additional rafters installed either side to support the necessary metalwork. At Toughened Glass Systems, we have the manufacturing technology, expertise and experience to provide you with the best non-opening roof windows UK wide.

This is because each and every one of our skylights is custom-built to order to the customer’s requirements. Call us on 02036 333 224 if you have queries. Alternatively, email us at [email protected] or request your free quote online today.

Can fixed rooflights be installed on a pitched roof?

Most rooflights are suitable to be installed on flat roofs on a pitch up to 15 degrees whereas pitched rooflights can maximise the level of natural light that enters your room by being fitted at an angle up to 90 degrees. If you’re after a new feature for your pitched roof, you can view our full range of pitched roof windows. We also sell:

Can fixed rooflights be installed on a tiled roof?

Installing a non-opening rooflight on a tiled roof is a relatively simple process and should not be much more of a problem than a regular roof. Tiling is modular, and as such individual tiles can be removed to accommodate for a new rooflight installation with relative ease. Consult your builder before having a fixed rooflight installed on your tiled roof.

Our collection above features solutions for all needs. Including fixed rooflights for flat roofs and non-opening roof windows for pitched roofs. View our helpful blog on what you should consider before buying a rooflight if you’re looking for more information.

Frequently asked questions

Framed or frameless: which fixed rooflight suits my project?

A framed unit has a visible perimeter and is often the more budget-friendly build, while a frameless design gives an uninterrupted view of the sky. Browse our framed skylights range and frameless skylights range to compare both side by side.

What if I want some ventilation later, but I'm choosing a fixed rooflight now?

A fixed unit can’t be retrofitted to open, so if there’s any chance you’ll want ventilation down the line, it’s worth deciding upfront. Our Electric & Manual Opening Rooflights and wider opening rooflights range cover that option if you’re still deciding.

Do you offer fixed rooflights sized for specific rooms like bedrooms or living rooms?

Yes. See our bedroom skylights and living room skylights ranges for guidance and options suited to each room.

Can I get a fixed rooflight for a conservatory or orangery?

Yes. See our conservatory rooflights range and orangery roof lanterns range if you’re glazing either of these spaces specifically.

What's the difference between a fixed rooflight, a fixed skylight, and a ceiling window?

In everyday UK usage these terms are largely interchangeable, all describing a unit that lets light in from above without opening. See our ceiling windows range, or our guide on the difference between skylights, rooflights and roof windows for the fuller terminology breakdown.

Are aluminium-framed fixed rooflights available?

Yes. Browse our aluminium rooflights range if a slim aluminium frame suits your project better than PVCu.

What's the difference between a fixed rooflight and a roof lantern?

A fixed rooflight sits low and close to flush, while a roof lantern is a raised, multi-paned structure with a pitched profile, and most lanterns are fixed by default too. Our rooflights vs roof lanterns comparison and roof lanterns guide cover the distinction, and our roof lanterns range has the full selection.

Which flat rooflights are available as fixed units?

Our Flat Rooflight and Triple-Glazed Self-Clean Rooflight are both available fixed. Our full flat roof skylights range and buying guide cover the rest of that category.

Do you stock named brands like Korniche as fixed units?

Yes. The Korniche Flat Lite is available fixed, and the Korniche Roof Lantern covers the raised end of the range if you want the same brand across a different profile.

Do you sell circular, pyramid, or polycarbonate rooflights as fixed units too?

Yes. Our Circular Rooflights, pyramid skylights range, and polycarbonate rooflights range all include fixed options, and if your roof is genuinely pitched rather than flat, our pitched roof skylight windows range has fixed choices too.

Why buy your fixed rooflight from Toughened Glass Systems?

Alongside a Best Price Guarantee and UK-wide delivery, every unit is custom-built to order rather than picked from generic stock.
