Opening rooflights are available in both manual and automatic models. An automatic rooflight can be opened through the use of a switch or remote, a switch will be included as standard with an opening rooflight installation. This is particularly beneficial if the rooflight will be installed on a high-ceiling, where regular access would be difficult.
Manual opening rooflights are operated through the use of a pole, which can be provided with the installation. Manual opening rooflights offer an easy ventilation solution that does not require tampering with the building pre-existing wiring to install.

Opening rooflights are not suitable as a means of access, as they are only capable of opening enough to provide ventilation to the room. Some opening rooflights can open fully for maintenance access, but these should not be used for regular access. If you require regular access to your roof space, you should consider installing an Access Hatch Rooflight.
